  • Utilizing masking techniques in design
Using the Fireworks application
  • Text Book Reference: Visual Quickstart Guide - Read Chapter 11 & 12
  • Video Tutorial: Log on to Lynda.com - Learning Fireworks MX 2004 - Review the following video tutorial (Quicktime plug in required)

    Typography
    ::typography 20:51 (35.3 MB)
    ::importing type 3:39 (5.3 MB)
    ::text on a path 8:53 (15.8 MB)

    ::scale, skew and distort 6:06 (11.6 MB)

  • Review Visual handout on Masking. (Note this is NOT a tutorial but more of a visual outline SUMMARY about the Masking technique)
    This will help you with assignment 5B
Assignments

Reminder - Please make sure that you have completed the reading requirement section before working on the assignments section

Assignment 5A (Typography) & 5B (Masking Techniques) CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS. Upon completion of your assignment please post it for comments & reviews by Friday, October 21st, 2005

C. Required participation for the week. Students must pick at least 2 peers to give comments and feedbacks on their assignments for each section. This is counted as class participation.

D. Complete Unit 1 Survey (5 pts)

Assignment 5A Requirements

Designing with Type (Note you may designed this in Assignment 2 but additional exploration & better understanding is needed for this exercise)

  1. Create 2 pieces of work STRICTYLY with type design. This is a creative piece. Again experiment with colors. Use Sans and Sans serif fonts, script type, typewriter fonts, symbols etc. Apply the techniques taught in the Lynda Video. Include a report of color selection (use color relationship terms), type style and formatting features used, and techniques applied.
  2. Answer this question - Is type Vector or Bitmap? Why? (Note: Please reference your answer to the readings. There may be more than one answer to this question)

Simple type is vector, however, you may create text that can be converted into a bitmap for several reasons. One reason could be to assure that the graphical type is displayed with the characteristics you have applied. For example: font, color, size etc. Users may not have a certain font on their computer, and when they view the file it will convert the type to the type that exists on their computer; which defeats the purpose of designing the type with certain characteristics.

According to The Web Style Guide "typography cannot always be neatly separated from the graphics of your Web site. Graphic text can be tightly integrated with images in ways that are impossible in HTML text; For aesthetic reasons you may choose to use graphical representations of type rather than manipulate HTML type." Antialiasing is another technique used to optimize the look of graphics and typography, which smoothes the jaged edges of large text, not in small text. If you import a graphic from Photoshop is automatically becomes antialiased.

Assignment 5B Requirements

Using Masking Techniques

  1. Create a piece of work which displays the following (Note you may use Type as Mask) Vector which functions as a mask (Path Outline)
  2. Vector which functions as a mask (Grayscale appearance)
  3. Bitmap which functions as a mask (Challenge exercise - how would you create this?)
    Again be creative with your work. Keeping in mind design elements (including color, with contrast application) and creativity through EXPERIMENTATIONS! For those who have not worked much on experimentations, take this opportunity to extend the technical & creating application. (You have a chance to get extra credit & make up for lost points. Your work is graded on effort & progress.).
