Real Estate Expert wins National Teaching Award

Houston – “Everybody has different gifts, so identify them and go with those strengths,” Pat Streeter says about being a good teacher.

Her career began 28 years ago dividing her time between being a title specialist for a real estate company and working as a part-time professor for HCC. She says she always felt in her heart that she wanted to become a full-time professor, since it was “in her blood”. Both her parents were university professors, so she dove into the full-time professor world after the title company was downsized.

Ms. Streeter is now the recipient of the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Award (N.I.S.O.D.). She says she considers herself to have three very important gifts that help her be an effective teacher. “I’m a big encourager, I love to motivate the students because they need people to believe in them,” she says about one of her “gifts”. “I love to be a dynamic classroom teacher, our classes are 4 hour sessions and these students come straight from an 8 hour work day, so I have to be creative to keep them awake,” she explains about her second quality. “I’m a high energy sort of person.” “I’m also very organized.”

The N.I.S.O.D. award is given to teachers who prove excellence in a higher education classroom.

A native of Memphis, Tennessee and a graduate of the University of Houston Ms. Pat Streeter is an instructor at Houston Community College in the Real Estate department. She currently teaches at the West Loop Campus in Houston’s Southwest near the Galleria.

“People who are self-starters, they don’t have to have a boss looking over their shoulder,” “these careers are not office careers, they will not stay in the office,” says Ms. Streeter about people who are thinking about going into the real estate world.

“We have the real estate degree, if the student comes back to take credit real estate courses they will get their degree,” she says is what sets the HCC real estate program apart.

And for anyone thinking about going into real estate she says, “Just do something you love.”
