Financial Aid - Work Study

What is the College Work-Study (CWS) Program?

It is a program offered by HCCS in cooperation with the Federal/State government. The main purpose of CWS is the give part-time employment to undergraduates and graduate students who need the income to help meet the costs of post-secondary education and to encourage CWS recipients to participate in community service activities. CWS will attempt to complement the student's educational program to the maximum extent possible.

What is the rate of pay?

The hourly rate of pay is $5.50 for on campus positions and $7.00 for off campus positions. Students can work up to 40 hours per week. CWS earnings are subject to taxation.

How do I qualify?

Students interested in CWS must:

1. Be enrolled at HCCS throughout the enrollment period.

2. Possess valid identification and employment eligibility documents.

3. Submit your financial aid application early in the year (remember that the CWS program is awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis).

When can I start working?

You may begin your assignment as soon as you:

1. Attend a College Work-Study Orientation.

2. Complete and submit all required forms.

3. Been assigned to a work site.

What is the length of employment?

Your employment will be for the Fall term of the current school year, through the Spring semester of the same school year, if you remain eligible.

Will I get the job I want?

There is no guarantee you will get the job you want. It is recommended that you present yourself well at the referral interview.

When will I get paid?

You will be paid twice a month, on the 15th and the last day of each month.

Can I be terminated?

Yes you can be terminated, if:

1. The supervisor request that you be terminated.


2. Your totally withdraw from your classes here at HCCS.


3. You earn the entire CWS award for the award year.

Will have breaks while I work?

If you work for four (4) hours of continuous work, you are entitled to one 15-minute break. Consult your supervisor as to when you may take your breaks.

What makes a good CWS employee?

1. Is present and on time to work.

2. Completes each task as scheduled and within a reasonable amount of time.

3. Carefully notes and adheres to instructions and produces work of the highest quality ad reflects the best effort.

4. Is cooperative and displays a good attitude towards co-workers and supervisor.

5. Adjusts easily to various types of situations, uses mature judgment, and is self-confident, patient, tactful, courteous, and accepts criticism positively.

6. Displays cooperation, integrity, dependability, poise and self-control when interacting with others.

7. Cooperates with the CWS coordinator in locating and solving problems that may occur within the position.

8. Submits periodic timesheets neatly, correctly, and on time.

9. Monitors hours worked and money earned as not to exceed the CWS award.

10. Communicates with the CWS coordinator if any concerns arise that cannot be resolved through the supervisor.
