Article: How To Detect Your Dream Job

By Rochelle Melander

Eleanor, a 35-year-old nurse, feels stuck in her current career. Up to this point, Eleanor used the advice of friends, colleagues, family members, and bosses to guide each step of her life. Rarely has she asked herself, "What do I want?" Previously, Eleanor only changed jobs when a new opportunity came to her. She never searched for her own opportunities -- until now.

When Eleanor came to me for coaching, she articulated her desire in this way: "I don't want to jump from job to job because of the suggestions of others. I want to discover what I want and do it." I shared with Eleanor a favorite quote of mine: "One does not invent one's mission, one detects it" (Victor Frankl). That day, Eleanor began detecting her own dreams!

She set aside time each week to search for clues. She hoped these clues would lead her to the next phase of her life. Here are some of the techniques Eleanor is used:

  • Sort through your childhood memorabilia. What do they tell you about what you love to do?
  • Make a list of your favorite childhood activities, games, books, and places.
  • Create a collage, using magazines, of words and pictures you feel drawn to.
  • Wander through a bookstore. What topics captivate you?
  • Write yourself a letter dated ten years from now. Tell yourself what you are doing, where you live, and what you have accomplished.
  • Make a list of 50 things you want to do before you die.
Eleanor did all of these exercises and more. She came up with a list of three things she was passionate about: children, making art, and helping people. Eleanor decided to spend the next six months detecting where these passions might lead her. She spent a month volunteering at a local shelter teaching art courses. She also explored the art museum, art therapy, art education, and childcare. Eleanor believes one of these adventures will support her in finding out what she wants to do with her life. She can’t wait for the fun to begin!

Most of us pay too much attention to the advice of other people. The exercises Eleanor did helped her to rely on the person who matters most: herself. Try them and detect your own life's mission.
