FAQs
1. Why do I have to take GUST
0101?
GUST 0101 is an orientation course that provides you with a general
knowledge of the services provided at most colleges and especially
HCCS Southwest College. This course also teaches you specific learning
skills that you will need for your entire life. However, the most
important factor in GUST 0101 is the mentoring factor. You will
be paired with a HCCS staff member who will be available to answer
questions and provide you assistance for your entire HCCS educational
journey.
2. Why are study skills important?
After you receive your college degree and
are in the workforce, you will need to keep learning. Most of that
learning will be done by you on your own. The learning skills that
you acquire in college will provide you with the best techniques
to learn that new information on an individual basis.
The corporate world is asking colleges to teach these skills as
companies want their employees to stay in touch with new information
in their fields.
3. Why isn’t GUST 0101 taught like a regular
class where the instructor lectures at the same time in the same
room?
Unlike most classes that concentrate on one
area, GUST 0101 covers many varied areas. The best way to learn
information is to hear an expert in that area discuss that information,
so workshops/seminars are given on specific topics. You are allowed
to select the workshop/seminar in which you are interested. If this
information were given in a class format, you would be required
to listen to all information rather than information that pertains
to just you.
The “Seek and Find Activities” require you to learn
the information concerning HCCS by doing rather than by listening.
If you are required to do the activities, you are more likely to
retain the information of where the service is located and how it
pertains to you.
