Beginning Reading ESOL 0342
A beginning course in reading English. Emphasis
is placed on vocabulary building, reading skills and simple
spelling. Instruction is individualized.
This course seeks to prepare students for college level
academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following
objectives:
• introducing reading skills including word forms,
synonyms and antonyms and finding the main idea
• building vocabulary including acquisition of
estimated vocabulary of 500-1,000 words
• increasing awareness of spelling, dictionary
usage and interpreting the author's purpose
• carrying out an extensive reading program through
the use of graded readers
.
• developing elementary critical reading skills:
learning to recognize support for a thesis in a text.
Beginning Writing ESOL 0343
A course devoted to expanding vocabulary, developing
pronunciation skills, and simple spelling. Instruction
is individualized.
This course seeks to prepare students for college level
academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following
objectives:
• Introducing students to basic English rules
of capitalization, punctuation, and paragraph format.
• Introducing students to various common sentence
patterns, from simple sentences to the basics of co-ordination
and subordination.
• Most importantly, building basic knowledge
of paragraph organization with emphasis on developing
topic sentences, support, concluding sentences and the
use of basic transitions.
Grammar ESOL 0344
An introduction to basic English grammar. Emphasis
is placed on correct verb forms, parts of speech, sentence
order, capitalization, and punctuation.
This course seeks to prepare students for college level
academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following
objectives:
• Introducing students to the essential elements
of grammar;
• Strengthening students' abilities to produce
the new grammatical structures in a variety of communicative
contexts.
Beginning Conversation ESOL 0341
A course developing conversational skills in
simple English with emphasis on vocabulary and grammatical
structures used in day-to-day living. Vocabulary, pronunciation,
simple sentence structure, and intonation patterns are
stressed.
ESOL 0340, Beginning Conversation, seeks to prepare
students for college classes and speaking assignments
in general by accomplishing the following objectives:
• Developing students' conversational skills
through the use of vocabulary and grammatical structures
used in day-to-day living.
• Introducing students to real life situations
through the use of in-class presentations and role plays.
• Developing students' listening comprehension
skills through exposure to recorded and teacher-generated
listening comprehension material.
Level 2
Intermediate Reading ESOL 0346
A continuation of ESOL 0342, this course develops
reading skills and comprehension of more difficult reading
selections.
This course seeks to prepare students for college level
academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following
objectives:
• developing reading skills and strategies such
as understanding main ideas, supporting facts, and graphics
in texts
• acquisition of 1000-1500 new vocabulary words
• improving fluency in reading through the use
of extensive reading texts
• developing critical thinking skills
Intermediate Writing ESOL 0347
A continuation of ESOL 0343, this course develops
vocabulary skills, both written and oral. Students learn
to write short, simple paragraphs.
This course seeks to prepare students for continuation
into ESOL 0351 and ultimately for college level academic
or workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives:
• Strengthening student awareness of the basic
principles of organization of the single-paragraph composition,
focusing especially on the role of the topic sentence,
examples, details, and the conclusion.
• Strengthening student awareness of the nature
of the writing process, focusing especially on the areas
of effective prewriting, composing, revising, and editing.
• Strengthening students’ skills in the
basic principles of sentence combination, focusing especially
on the role of subordinating and coordinating conjunctions.
Intermediate Grammar ESOL 0348
A continuation of ESOL 0344, this course reviews the
basic structures of English grammar and develops the
production of complex English sentences.
This course seeks to prepare students for college level
academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following
objectives:
• Building on the syntactic knowledge that students
have gained in previous study of
English grammar while introducing more advanced structures
.
• Strengthening student's abilities to produce
the new grammatical structures in a variety of communicative
contexts.
Intermediate Conversation ESOL 0345
A continuation of ESOL 0341, this course places emphasis
on idiomatic speech, everyday vocabulary development,
and listening comprehension.
This course seeks to prepare students for college level
academic or workforce study by advancing them from high
beginning to high intermediate level in the following
English language skills:
• listening comprehension
• oral fluency
• active vocabulary
• pronunciation
Level 3
Advanced Intermediate Reading ESOL 0350
A continuation of ESOL 0346. This course is designed
to further develop reading comprehension skills and
expand vocabulary. This course provides practice in
skills such as identifying main ideas and supporting
details, determining the sequence of events, using context
clues, and drawing conclusions.
This course seeks to prepare students for college level
academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following
objectives:
• to help students read more effectively in
English by teaching them a variety of reading skills
and strategies which may include skimming, scanning
summarizing, finding the main idea and supporting details,
discovering word meanings (general as well as specific
vocabulary words) through context clues, and drawing
conclusions.
• to introduce students to a vocabulary of approximately
1,500-2,000 words, and help students increase their
vocabulary through knowledge and understanding of word
forms, prefixes and suffixes, and synonyms and antonyms
• to expose students to a variety of reading
sources which may include graded readers, computer reading
software, Internet sites aimed at general reading/vocabulary
development, as well as extensive reading of authentic
English text through periodicals and books.
• to help students improve their critical thinking
skills by analyzing various facets of their readings
including understanding the author's purpose and how
the rhetorical styles are used in relation to this purpose.
Advanced Intermediate Writing ESOL 0351
A continuation of ESOL 0347. This course concentrates
on the development of writing skills using controlled
composition and production of the five-paragraph essay.
This course seeks to prepare students for continuation
into ESOL 0354 and ultimately for college composition
courses and academic writing in general by accomplishing
the following objectives:
• Strengthening students' awareness of the basic
notions of paragraph development, particularly the role
of the topic sentence and the internal logical development
of the paragraph.
• Introducing to students the basic principles
of the multi-paragraph composition, focusing especially
on the role of the introductory and concluding paragraphs,
drafting an effective thesis statement,, and organizing
the composition according to a clear logical pattern.
• Improving students' sentence combination skills,
especially in the area of the strategy and techniques
of coordination within compound sentences and within
simple complex sentences
• Increasing student awareness of the nature
of the writing process, especially in the area of effective
topic construction and in the necessity and techniques
of revision and editing.
Grammar ESOL 0352
A continuation of ESOL 0348. This course provides a
review of essential grammatical and structural features
while introducing their finer points. Emphasis is placed
on compound and complex sentence structures and is designed
to lead students toward active mastery of the patterns
and principles of formal written English.
This course seeks to prepare students for college level
academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following
objectives:
• Building on the syntactic knowledge that students
have gained in previous study of English grammar while
introducing more advanced structures as well as the
finer nuances involving tense and aspect of English
verbs; •
• Strengthening students' abilities to produce
the new grammatical structures in a variety of communicative
contexts.
Conversation ESOL 0349
A continuation of ESOL 0345. This course is designed
to further develop conversational skills by incorporating
more complicated vocabulary and grammatical structures.
Students are also required to present oral reports at
various times during the semester.
After taking this course, the student should:
1. Be able to get the gist, supporting ideas, and some
inferences from conversations and talks dealing with
workforce and academic topics.
2. Exhibit familiarity with common academic and workforce
vocabulary.
3. Exhibit familiarity with English pronunciation and
most stress and intonation patterns.
4. Be able to present individual, pair, group, and
panel presentations on researched topics.
5. Be able to be generally understood by someone who
has some contact with non-native speakers of English.
6. Be able to take notes on short workforce and academic
topics.
Level 4
Advanced Reading, ESOL 0353
A continuation of ESOL 0350. This course is designed
to further develop critical reading skills for college-bound
students. The skills gained in ESOL 0350 are further
refined to guide students towards mastery of deduction,
inference and figurative language.
This course seeks to prepare students for college level
academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following
objectives:
• Enable students to read moderate-length texts
(2-3,000 words) and decode rhetorical structures such
as causation, comparison & contrast, definition,
classification, and favored vs. unfavored opinions;
• Give students the opportunity to read extensively
from authentic academic sources as well as high-school-level
literature and popular publications
• Introduce students to a vocabulary of approximately
2,000-3,000 words, taken largely from authentic academic
English sources;
• develop students’ skills in critical
research, using the Internet and college libraries.
Advanced Composition, ESOL 0354
A continuation of ESOL 0352. This course provides a
review of both essential and finer points of the grammatical
structural features of formal written English. Emphasis
is placed on active production and error analysis of
standard English.
This course seeks to prepare students for college composition
courses and academic writing in general by accomplishing
the following objectives:
• Strengthening students' awareness of the basic
notions of paragraph development, particularly the role

Advanced Conversation, ESOL 0356
A continuation of ESOL 0349. This course is designed
to encourage students’ use of high-level grammatical
structures and vocabulary skills. Students are required
to present an oral book report, and oral report of a
personal, off-campus interview, and an oral research
report
This course seeks to prepare students for college level
academic or workforce study by accomplishing the following
objectives:
• Students are able to make inferences regarding
complex ideas.
• Students continue to refine their stress and
intonation skills.
• Students continue to refine note-taking skills,
and are able to use their notes to summarize in both
oral and written form.
• Students are able to function in every day
academic interactions
