Course Descriptions

RTVB 1317 SURVEY OF ELECTRONIC MEDIA (Also COMM 1335)

Credit:3 (3 lecture)
A survey of the broadcast and cable industry. Topics include the history of the broadcast and cable industries, operation of radio and TV stations, cable facilities, programming practices of radio, and Federal Communication Commission (FCC) organization and regulatory activity. Also includes career opportunities in broadcasting and cable and the impact of the new media.

RTVB 1401 BROADCAST NEWS WRITING (Also COMM 2332)

Prerequisite: ENGL 1301
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 2 lab)

Instruction in the writing of news copy. Topics include proper style and format used, broadcast news scripts, organization of the newscast, use of Teleprompters, and computerized news copy editing systems.

RTVB 1409 AUDIO/RADIO PRODUCTION I

Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 2 lab)
An introduction to the concepts and techniques of sound production including basic recording, mixing, and editing techniques.


RTVB 1421 TV FIELD PRODUCTION (Also COMM 1337)

Prerequisite: RTVB 1317
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 4 lab)

A study of the pre-production, production, and post-production process involved in field television production. Topics include field camera setup and operation, field audio, television directing, and
in-camera or basic continuity editing with emphasis on underlying principles of video technology.


RTVB 1425 TV STUDIO PRODUCTION (Also COMM 1336)

Prerequisite: RTVB 1317
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 4 lab)

A study of basic television production as it applies to live and taped studio programming. Topics include studio camera operation, television audio, and television directing with an emphasis on underlying principles of video technology.

RTVB 1429 WRITING FOR ELECTRONIC MEDIA (Also COMM 2339)

Prerequisite: ENGL 1301
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 2 lab)

An introduction to the writing of commercials, public service announcements, promos, news documentaries, and other broadcast and film materials. Emphasis on the format and style of each type of writing and development of a professional writing style.

RTVB 1447 AUDIO/RADIO PRODUCTION II

Prerequisite: RTVB 1409
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 2 lab)

Futher study of audio production theories including an introduction to multitrack recording. Topics include studio and live production and equipment operation.

RTVB 1491 VIDEOTAPE EDITING - ST (Also COMM 2129)

Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 2 lab)
Principles of video/audio post-production editing from tape to tape. Includes fundamental electronic concepts, assemble editing, and audio and video insert editing, equipment operation, story construction, special effects utilization, EDL formation and utilization, and control track vs. time code editing. Extensive hand-on-experience.


RTVB 2430 NON-LINEAR VIEDO EDITING

Prerequisite: RTVB 1317 and Department Approval
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 4 lab)

An examination of the principles of non-linear editing. Students review fundamental editing concepts, select clips for editing and set up the computer. Students edit segments, create special effects and mix audio for video. The completed digital master is then laid back to videotape. This course involves extensive hands-on experience. Students will produce long form programs using story line editing including conceptualization and script writing.


RTVB 2435 TV PRODUCTION

Prerequisite: RTVB 1421 and RTVB 1425
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 4 lab)

A study of pre-production, production and post-production process involved in single and multiple camera studio or field television production. Advanced instruction in camera operation, lighting, audio, television directing, and single and multiple source editing with emphasis on underlying principles of
video technology.

RTVB 2486 INTERNSHIP-RADIO AND TELEVISION BROADCASTING
(Also COMM 2129)

Prerequisite: RTVB 1317 and Departmental Approval

)
An experience external to the college for an advanced student in a specialized field involving a written agreement between the educational institutional and a business industry. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college and that are directly related to specific occupational outcomes. This may be a paid or unpaid experience. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary.


IMED 2441 ADVANCED DIGITAL VIDEO

Prerequisites: departmental approval
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 4 lab)

Instruction in the use of advanced digital video techniques for post-production. Emphasis on generation and integration of special effects, 2- D animation, and 3-D animation for film, video, CD-ROM, and the Internet. Exploration of new and emerging compression and video streaming technologies.

ARTC 1302 DIGITAL IMAGING (Photoshop)

Digital Imaging using raster image-editing and/or image creation software: scanning, resolution, file formats, output devices, color systems, and image-acquisitions.

GRPH 1359 OBJECT ORIENTED COMPUTER GRAPHICS (Illustrator)

department approval
Credit: 3 (2 lecture, 4 lab)

Mastery of the tools and transformation options of an industry standard draw program to create complex illustrations and follow them through to the color output stage. Mastery in the use of basic elements of good layout and design principles and use the capabilities specific to vector (object oriented) drawing software to manipulate both text and graphics with emphasis on the use of bezier curves. Acquisition of images via scanning and the creative use of clip art is included. A course designed to aid students in learning how to make wise career and life decisions based on assessing themselves and the world of work. Students will explore options that match their unique selves and participate in goal setting based on what they have learned during the semester. Also included will be the development of job-seeking skills.
