ACCOUNTING PROGRAM
Training individuals for the many and varied jobs in  accounting is a basic objective of the Accounting program. Graduates should be able to keep a small set of books, assist in developing a set of books, make accounting entries in the accounting department of larger companies, and perform other duties required of junior accountants. 

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

To provide students in the community with occupational and technical instruction, continuing education, college parallel courses, professional assistance, and resources for learning, thereby providing them quality and professional education.

The Accounting Program at HCCS  prepare students for a variety of jobs. Some of these positions are as follows:

I. Accounting jobs requiring a two-year degree or accounting certificate:

÷ Accounting Clerk

÷ Bookkeeper

÷ Payroll Clerk

II. Accounting jobs requiring a minimum of a four-year degree:

÷ Staff Accountant

÷ Controller

÷ Chief Financial Officer

¨ Note: Students with four-year non-accounting degrees, take upper-level accounting courses at HCCS to qualify for their CPA exam.

A.A.S.-Associate in Applied Science Degree

This program prepares students for the many and varied jobs in Accounting. Graduates will be able to keep a set of books, assist in the Accounting department of larger companies and perform duties required of bookkeepers, junior or staff accountants. Some courses in this degree are NOT fully transferable.

AA-Associate in Arts Degree

This degree is offered for the student planning to continue his/her studies at a four-year institution. ALL courses are transferable.

Accounting Certificate

This certificate is offered for students who want to enhance their accounting studies, as well as their computer skills, both necessary in todayís workplace.

CPA Qualifying Courses

THE ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT OFFERS SELECTED COURSES THAT WILL QUALIFY FOR THE CPA EXAM.  THE STATE OF TEXAS' STATE BOARD OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTANCY HAS ACCREDITED THESE COURSES FOR CPA CANDIDATES.  FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONTACT DR. MARINA GRAU @ 713/718-7904 OR E-MAIL marina.grau@HCCS.EDU

Cooperative Education

The Cooperative Education program gives Accounting students the opportunity to integrate their classroom study with practical experience by working full or part-time in a field related to their career goal and earn college credit hours at the same time

Computerized Accounting

Learn the very popular general ledger packages QuickBooks, Peachtree. Be also proficient in Turbo Tax for individuals and corporations.

High School Tech Prep Award

HCCS has many agreements in place with local area high schools in which college credit is given for high school courses. See a counselor for more information.

Quality of Instruction

Accounting instructors have many years of experience in Public Accounting, Industry and Education, teaching students how to relate theory to the real world.

Distance Education

Distance Education courses offer three semester hours of credit and are equivalent to on-campus courses in terms of transferability (no distinction is made on college transcripts)
